A good way to pause the game is to click the question mark in the top left corner. Watch out though, if you're higher up in points once you unpause the game the rifts will appear there. To avoid getting sucked in by the rifts when you're higher up in points & have no immunity...left click your mouse like you're trying to pick up the candy until you can move ahead to get immunity...it sometimes works.
