The short and possibly surprising answer is yes. The dice are very important to the backgammon game as they determine the movement of the players. The reason that they are important s that the chance element the dice bring to the game needs to remain as random as possible. Straight edge dice cause damage to the surface of the board, a damaged surface means the roll of the dice will be affected and so the outcome possibly unfair. The pips need to be inlaid to prevent any probability advantages other than the natural permutations of the dice.
