granny!! I did an exhaustive search for you... up most of the night... researching petrified mushrooms!!

Since seeing your post, I have teleconferenced, skyped, and sniped with leaders or members of the following groups:
Fossils Aficionados .com, Famous Fossil Hunters, Inc., Future Fossils of America, Fickle Fossil Finders-Keepers Association,
and finally, (my personal favorite) Fossil Lovers United Fiercely Forever (a.k.a F.L.U.F.F.)

Good News!! My research has lead me to your answer.... possibly.
Either,
A. You have a rare fossilized treasure worth a huge sum of money!

or....
B. You have an artifact, a funny looking rock, a mushroom shaped replica, or a fake fossil.

According to the F.L.U.F.F. group, [whom I now refer to as my 'FLUFFY FRIENDS' having made a number of new acquaintances during the skype-snipe sessions]
there are other possibilities that what you possess may be a :

C. putrefied mushroom ( the kind that are found way back in the dark corner of the fridge)

D. pretti-fied mushroom ( these have been all decorated to resemble the expensive ones, but are just plain-janes in disguise)

E. purified mushrooms (these have been hermetically sealed. They've been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under Funk and Wagnall's porch.)*

F. pesticide mushroom (will kill any bug within 10 yards)

G. pan-fried mushroom ( only kosher sea-salt and olive oil, please)

H. pissed-a-fied mushroom ( these are very angry mushrooms; back away slowly if you think you have one of these)

Regardless, you need to get your mushroom over to one of these groups or a museum curator
to see just exactly what you have!!
Good luck, granny! **

I know about mushrooms that leave the eater somewhat petrified, but I've never seen a petrified mushroom.
Embarassed
Good research work ElCee.

Little Granny, get one of your grandkids to post a photo of this mushroom so we can figure it out!

I have had a few forlorn forgotten mushrooms become "petrified" (or terrified) in the fridge. Placing them in warm water for a few hours seems to revive them. Do they need a Jacuzzi and massage??

Perhaps you can try that.

Otherwise it seems that turning organic matter into stone takes eons. We just did a tour of the petrified forest - turning those trees into stone takes way too long for any of our lifetimes. If you have discovered a short cut it could be worth MILLIONS.
